Better pigs to be bred, grown at city facility

Date: 2012-12-06

THE biggest pig breeding and production facility in Shanghai will open in April next year to ensure locally produced pork supplies for local markets and help improve pig stocks, Shanghai Agricultural Commission said yesterday.

The Dongtan Breeding Pig Production Base in the easternmost area of Shanghai, which covers 24.67 hectares, will provide 50,000 swine annually for local consumers.

Song Gaiping, head of the base being built by Shanghai Xiangxin Livestock Poultry Co, said they will introduce 850 pigs of three high-quality varieties - Duroc, Yorkshire and Landrace - from the United States.

Introducing the foreign species to help improve the current breeding pig in China is expected to provide pork with a better taste and pigs with stronger reproductive capabilities, Song said

The base will raise these imported and breeding pigs in a modernized environment in which temperature, ventilation and feeding are all automatically controlled.

All the equipment is imported at a total cost of nearly 20 million yuan (US$3.21 million).

There are also special units for pregnant pigs and baby pigs that will provide more intensive care and more nutritious food.

"Automatic equipment can save a lot of labor costs and improve efficiency compared to common pig sties," Song said.

The price of pork, milk and eggs in Shanghai has been rising due to the rising cost of feed and strong demand. Last year, the output of Shanghai's livestock industry reached 7.7 billion yuan, up 23.1 percent from 2010. Still, much of the city's pork has to be brought from other areas.
